Passive radio frequency identification tags prompt a transaction whenever they pass near a sensor. Passive systems can only log entry or exit actions and cannot provide data showing the subject’s location within the building.

Aside from being self-powered, active radio frequency identification tags can send repeated signals to receivers located within an area of interest, the exact opposite of GPS. Knowledge of the receiving sensors’ location enables accurate indoor positioning in near real-time.
